‘Megamind’ Wins the Weekend Box Office

Hard to keep track of all these animated films. Seems like they are the best movies made the last few years. At least they tend to do better than most everything else it appears.

The animated comedy “Megamind” was the weekend’s biggest winner, spreading its sinister influence over American moviegoers everywhere to the tune of $47.7 million. “Megamind” stars Will Ferrell as the titular supervillain, who goes through a change of heart once the defeat of his superhero arch rival (Brad Pitt) inspires the rise of a new bad guy (Jonah Hill). The flick shares similar themes to “Despicable Me,” Steve Carell’s animated superhero flick that arrived earlier this summer. Although “Megamind” scored roughly $10 million less in its opening weekend than “Despicable Me,” the success of both movies proves that it’s still good to be bad at the box office. pci compliance hosting

“Due Date”, Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis’ hilarious road-trip adventure brought in a solid $33.5 million for a second-place finish.

Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” debuted solidly in third place for Lionsgate, raking in $20.1 million in its first weekend in theaters.

Fourth place belonged to “Red” ($8.9 million), the Bruce Willis-led action comedy that continues to hold onto a top five seat after four weekends at the box office. The film currently sits atop a total domestic money pile worth $71.9 million. “Saw 3D” rounded out the weekend’s top five performers with an $8.2 million take.

Saw 3D Wins Halloween Weekend Box Office

No surprise that a horror movie was going to top the charts Halloween weekend. Personally, I wasn’t even sure if Saw 3D was a new movie, or just the original done up again in 3D. I assumed the latter and completely ignored it.

Saw 3D won the weekend by grossing $24.2 million, according to studio estimates.

That’s up from the last Saw movie, “Saw VI,” which opened to a dull $14.1 million a year ago. Only so much you can do with outdoor lighting in dank warehouses.

Last weekend’s winner, “Paranormal Activity 2,” plunged 59 percent for $16.5 million. The horror sequel has made $65.7 million after two weeks, a tremendous figure considering the film’s $3 million budget. But it appears the film may run out of steam before reaching the original movie’s final gross of $107.9 million.

Paranormal Activity 2, A Preemptive Review

Let me save you some cash you can use on diet pills that work and time. Paranormal Activity 2 is going to suck. Even if PA1 actually scared you, there is no possible way that this movie is going to be able to do the EXACT SAME THING and end up making you give a damn.

Paranormal Activity worked for easy to scare folks because it had that sort of “true story” side of it. PA2 has the same thing apparently, but guess what? We already know it isn’t true, just like you should have the first time. GHOSTS AREN’T REAL.

PA2 will be like watching the same damn movie except that they try to give you an actual story with motivations. LOL…are you kidding me? It’s garbage and I told you so before you even went.

“The Town” Exceeds Expectations On Opening Weekend

Ben Affleck’s robbery thriller opened Friday nationwide, and had a higher than expected opening of $23.8 million this weekend to take #1 at the box office. Affleck directed, acted in and was a writer of “The Town” so he pretty much did it all. It also start Mad Men star Jon Hamm.

“Easy A,” a teenage comedy from Sony Pictures Entertainment, was second, with about $18 million in sales, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office statistics. “Devil,” a horror entry produced by M. Night Shyamalan and distributed by Universal Pictures, finished third, with $12.6 million. Sony’s “Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D” plummeted to fourth place in its second weekend, selling about $10 million in tickets for a new domestic total of about $44 million.

I didn’t realize M. Night directed “Devil”. Not that it matters. I watch most big budget “horror/thriller” movies anyways no matter how many negatives I hear about them. I’m one of those that is a big B-horror buff. I don’t know why. For some reason I just like to watch them. Maybe it is the mindlessness of it all, or that it acts like appetite suppressants that work when they have enough gore…lol

‘Despicable Me’ Nets $60 Million Opening Weekend

Kids movies just seem to be better than all the other crap out there. All these animated movies do just enough to appeal to adults, but still keep it fun for the kids. While it may look like kid’s stuff, most of these animated movies throw in a little bit of adult humor along with a clean story that makes everyone happy. That means as they come off the assembly line, they pretty much already know that people want to see them.

“Despicable Me” is no different. With a huge opening weekend of $60 Million at the box office, it proves once again that people really just want to feel like kids at the movies and laugh at jokes about adult acne treatment.

The other new wide release, Predators starring Adrian Brody, earned an estimated $25.3 million for the weekend–above expectations and better than the majority of other Predator movies released over the last 23 years. The performances of these two films plus the strong holds of Toy Story, Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Grown Ups helped boost the box office up a remarkable 40 percent over last year at this time when Bruno opened to $30.6 million.

Despicable Me earned a solid A from audiences, according to exit pollster CinemaScore. The same can not be said for Predators, which only received a C+ from the exit pollster. In contrast, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which audiences love, lost 49 percent of its value the second weekend, better than New Moon did its third weekend in theaters. The film added $33.3 million to its coffers, for a second place finish. The David Slade-directed flick’s total gross now stands at $237 million. (The film still trails New Moon by $18 million but with a better hold perhaps its staying power will outweigh its predecessor in the end.)

Nobody Went To the Movies This Weekend

Box office numbers dropped to 17 year lows this year on Memorial Day weekend. Overall revenues for the top-50 films during the four-day holiday weekend came in at $192 million, the lowest since 2001. Factoring in today’s higher admission prices, about 24.2 million tickets were sold, the least since a 22.5 million head count in 1993, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Shrek stayed on top again with $57 Million of course because Shrek rules. Even without any acne cream he is still the greatest animation movie of the last 20 years IMO. Not sure about this one, but the first was amazing.

Apparently”Robin Hood” is a Tea Party Propaganda Film

At least this is what I gather from every uppity political paper out there that has reviewed it. Apparently, they all expected the movie to feature feminine men in tights having grab ass parties instead of Russel Crowe kicking ass.

First clue that this was going to be different should have been when Disney wasn’t making it, and Russel Crowe was playing Robin Hood.

Yes, every title I have seen mentions the “Tea Party” when talking about this movie. I just look at it as their new favorite catch phrase and look to see how EPIC the movie probably is. I want Gladiator 2 with guys doing atv riding, not Errol Flynne snapping towels with other guys in tights.

The funny thing is, that I get the impression most of these people never even viewed the movie yet. They just “heard” about some of the plot elements and decided that it was a great time to bash some political party, or movement.

I’ll wait until people that aren’t political whiners decide to start telling me about it. You know actual movie goers who don’t want to spew political opinions while they review things. I certainly haven’t been able to find anything that actually talks about it as a movie yet anyways.

Lindsay Lohan to Play Pornstar Linda Lovelace (Deep Throat)

Say what you want about Lohan and her messed up life lately, but she certainly should be able to pull off this role. I mean to play someone that was even more F’d up than you are? Has to be good therapy don’t you think? Hopefully she will at least be in shape because I imagine there will be a lot of nudity in this one while she is destroying mattresses.

Lindsay Lohan will portray a porn star, according to Wali Razaqi, Linda Lovelace, the Deep Throat superstar who later became a feminist crusader against pornography. Razaqi confirmed to EW.com that “Lindsay Lohan has been cast as Linda Lovelace” in Inferno, and also told The Los Angeles Times that “We’ve all thought that Lindsay would be a great choice for a while now, and we’re all convinced that she is going to do it.”

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” Remake

Let me first say that A nightmare on Elm Street (ANOES) was my favorite horror movie as a kid. It scared the crap out of me. When I saw it was being remade like the Friday the 13th movies I was sort of intrigued, but I am very skeptical that it can live up to my memories. Robert Englund is a horror master, and played Freddy like nobody else can. The pictures I’ve seen of Freddy now just look stupid, and from the review I read here at MTV.com I am pretty sure I won’t be impressed.

The original ANOES was frightening, and it felt original to my young mind. Sure it was another teen slasher, but Freddy was a real wisecracking badass. We probably would have looked for some online life insurance after we got home today because we were afraid to sleep.

Just hearing the rehash from that review makes me long to see the original again though. So many great scenes even though it is quite cheesy now. I know I’ve seen all the N”Nightmare” movies, but I think instead of getting this one at the theater I may just find myself a weekend to watch the classics once again and wait for this to come out on DVD. I have to watch it eventually I guess, but I don’t feel optimistic.

To 3D, or Not to 3D

As the 3D market becomes more and more prevalent, there are as many critics, as there are of people that want it. The main concern for most is the jump in ticket prices as more and more films are either being converted, or made in 3D. This is only a temporary thing I would guess. These films won’t do that well forever I don’t think anyways, although ticket prices will go up regardless.

Of course a lot of people are in the mode of: “3-D is just a stupid gimmick”, so the increased prices are even more of a reason to dismiss the quality. From the talk of getting 3-D on everything from cell phones to digital cameras in the future this isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Overall, the reaction to the conversions has been pretty good from everything I have read. I don’t think the average viewer can tell the difference at this point. “clash of the Titans”, (A childhood favorite of mine), was a conversion after the remake was already completed. Most say that it looks good, and that the computer generated stuff you can’t tell the difference.

Who knows how many have actually seen a 3-D movie before this in the new styles though.
